When selling items from trusted drop ship distributors, the need to find the \”hottest\” item on eBay is less important than finding a quality item to sell on eBay. If you are buying in bulk or light bulk, you have to worry about moving your full inventory stock, but if you select and item which is not selling when using a drop ship source, your only risk is the listing fee.

It s easy to understand the desire to have the \”hottest\” selling item on eBay….but the issue with trying to find the hottest selling item on eBay is that it is already being sold by a large number of users. The \”best seller\” or \”hottest seller\” is a historical figure based on what HAS sold….not what WILL sell. Also, once an item is a top seller on eBay, it s no longer a secret.

This means other sellers will try to list this same item or will try to compete more significantly for the sales volume on this product causing the price and profit margin to lower on this item.

Also, some of the so called hottest eBay products are MAP based items which means there is a minimum price you can sell the item at on eBay and often times for MAP items the difference between MAP and the wholesale cost is very small. Have you ever looked at a wholesale supplier price for an X-Box, PlayStation, or iPad for example and said, \”Hey…this wholesale cost is what this item basically sells for on eBay?!\”

The reason for seeing a wholesale and retail cost on some items which match is both you and the supplier might not get any margin on the item, so it does not matter if it s a retail listing or a wholesale listing. No one makes any significant margin on these items, even when you buy them in bulk like Best Buy or Target. Sometimes the manufacture or even the distributor might lose money when selling them. The reason you sell the X-Box or iPad or Garmin GPS is not to make margin on that item, but it s to make money on other items. By listing some of these big name MAP items, you can now cross-sell all of the accessories to your eBay customers, and it s on these accessories where you make up all of the margin.
